Description

Letter from Robert Burns to Thomas Orr, Kirkoswald, dated Lochlea, 7 September 1782.

At the time Burns wrote this letter, he was working on his skills as a correspondent. He met this letter's recipient, Thomas Orr, when they were at school in Kirkoswald in 1775. He kept in touch with him through letters, this being the first which survives.

Burns infers he is writing for the sake of writing rather than to impart specific news. He announces that he found the study of mankind and learning from observation to be the way 'to make yourself wiser & better.'

Burns also asks Orr to pursue this correspondence, which he does although none of his letters survive.
