Description

The Bonnie Lass o' Ballochmyle.

This poem consists of five eight-line stanzas. It is set to the tune Ettrick Banks. The 'Bonnie Lass o' Ballochmyle' is Wilhelmina Alexander, sister of Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle. The manuscript contains a footnote in the hand of Burns, stating, 'The above Song cannot be published without the consent of the Lady, which I have desired a common friend to ask'.

Robert Burns had seen Miss Alexander when he was out walking one evening and, inspired by her charms, composed this song with an accompanying complimentary letter. For the rest of her life she remained unmarried, and, according to biographical accounts, she treasured these items during her long life.
