Impromptu
[By Mrs Allardyce, wife of the Minister of Tongue, Aberdeenshire)
Oh may these leaves ne'er meet the glance
Of "jut conceited Ignorance!"!
Far hence, be Folly's scornful sneer!
And Wealth's proud gaze come never here!
But to th' enthusiast's humid eye,
To Pity's retrospective sigh;
To youthful Bard -- or hoary Sage,
Will sacred be the dingy page!
For Oh! the hand that traced each line
Could wake the Lyre to notes devine;
At inspiration's kindling flame,
From Toil's hard hand soft numbers came.
And here, the Eye, now set in night,
But beaming once with heavenly light,
Has bent in studious reverie
Or shone with fitful energy --
