Description

The Fête Champetre by Robert Burns, c1788.

Begins: "O wha will to Saint Stephen's house" 7 eight-line verses. William Cunninghame of Annbank and Enterkin (b. 1757), the subject of this poem, gave a ball to celebrate his coming-of-age and the inheritance of his grandfather's estates of Annbank.

In this humorous piece Robert pokes fun at a garden party (fête champetre) held by someone he suspected might be buttering up the guests to get their vote at a forthcoming election.
