the Globe, but could not find you.-
I want you to dine with me today, -

Letter from Robert Burns to William Lorimer.
In this letter to William Lorimer, Burns invites his friend to a dinner party hosted at his home in Dumfries. Burns had been searching for Lorimer at both his home and the Globe Tavern to offer this invitation but has resorted to a written note. Others will be joining them for ‘a plateful of hotch-potch and a bottle of good sound port.’ Burns also writes that his wife Jean would like William's daughter Jeany to visit at the same time.
William Lorimer was a good friend of the poet who lived a few miles from Ellisland farm. Burns's friendship was tested when his excise supervisor Alexander Findlater claimed Lorimer was a smuggler. Burns promised to be extra cautious but as seen in this letter, continued to have good relations with the family.
