Description

Ebonised vingette woodcut block used for 'The Works of Robert Burns,' Liverpool Edition. This rectangular block features the thistle and serpent.

The four wood blocks were by Bewick and used in the first Liverpool edition of the 'The Works of Robert Burns' in 1800 and subsequent editions. The woodcuts depicting various aspects of nature featured in the Poet's works were used in volumes 2, 3 and 4.
