Description

This pale blue hand-painted china bowl was used make toddy and was reportedly used by Burns at his brother Gilbert's wedding to Jean Breckenridge at Mossgiel, on 21 June 1791.

White and hand-painted in pale blue and pink with a label attached to the base which reads 'Toddy was made in this bowl by Burns at the wedding of his brother Gilbert at Mossgeil June 21 1791' signed 'G. Burns Knockmaroon Lodge (Dublin) 1874'.

On the bottom of the bowl is a label indicating the authenticity of the relic. It is in the handwriting of the poet's nephew Gilbert Burns and is dated Knockmaroon Lodge (Dublin) 1874. Robert is believed to have used this punch bowl and ladle in his local pub, Nanse Tinnock’s Inn in Mauchline.
