This is a copy, one of twelve such produced by Henry Dixon & Son London in 1891, of the original in red crayon on grey paper by Archibald Skirving which now hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

The Skirving portrait done between 1796 and 1798 was itself a copy from the original by Alexander Nasmyth and was considered by many as the finest representation of the poet.
