Portrait of Robert Burns after Alexander Nasmyth. Oil on board. Giltwood ornate frame and oval gilt mount. Titled underneath 'Copy of Portrait in National Portrait Gallery, London, of Burns by Alexander Nasmyth'. Label on back of frame for 'John Mathieson & Co., Fine Art Dealers, Edinburgh'.

This bust portrait is a copy in oils of Robert Burns by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) which he painted from life in Edinburgh in 1787. The original hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, to whom it was bequeathed by his son William Nicol Burns in 1872.

Nasmyth is known to have painted three versions of the Bust portrait of Robert Burns, of the later two, one is in the National Portrait Gallery in London and the other in the Glasgow Art Gallery.
