This dramatic scene depicts Burns dressed as a gentleman on a white horse with a companion being caught during a thunderstorm. As the scene was painted in 1793 it is possible that it was set somewhere around Dumfries where he was living at the time.

The engraving is by G.H.Every after James M. Scrymgeour. It is a typical mid- 18th. Century romanticized depiction of the poet.
