Description

Black and white print of 'Burns in Edinburgh 1787 / reading his poem of the 'Winter Night' before a literary gathering at the duchess of Gordon'. Accompanied underneath by the names of the people portrayed. After a painting by Charles Martin Hardie. In giltwood frame.

The original painting from which this engraving is copied is executed in oils by Charles Martin Hardie ARSA and is on display at the Irvine Burns Club. A number of engravings have been made of this well known scene which shows the poet Burns reading his poem The Winters Night to a literary gathering at the Duchess of Gordon's home in Edinburgh.

The artist took great trouble to create authentic likenesses of the celebrity guests attending this literary gathering and their names are printed at the bottom of the picture.
