Description

Copy of Midwood painting of Burns & Highland Mary in open frame.

This engraving depicts Burns on the banks of the Fail burn in Ayrshire who is seen being betrothed to Mary Campbell, a servant. In the picture they are seen exchanging bibles. They planned to emigrate to Jamaica but she contracted a fever and died in 1786 and was buried in a Greenock Churchyard. She was one of Burns' great loves.

The original oil painting by W.H. Midwood was painted in 1864 and currently hangs in the museum of Burns' birthplace in Alloway. A great deal of mystery even today surrounds the story of the poet and 'Highland Mary'.
