Description

Engraving of scene outside Burns Cottage in 1829 which shows a man with a scythe at the door of the barn, a thatched cottage opposite and in the distance the Carrick hills with a large mansion possibly Newark Castle. cream mount.

Label on the back of the frame for 'W'm Lymburn, Picture Frame Maker. 10 Charlotte Street, Ayr'. Handwritten on the mount 'Burns Cottage 1829'. In a wood and giltwood frame.

At the time of this picture the Cottage was in the hands of the Incorporated Shoemakers of Ayr and was being used as an ale-house. Some evidence of this could be explained by the boards either side of the main entrance.
