Description

This carving in limewood by Thomas H.Tweedy, c1860, depicts the scene early in the poem by Robert Burns of Tam o' Shanter, where Tam is seen seated in the ale-house on market day in Ayr "getting fou and unco happy".

Tam's drinking companions in this scene are said to be Souter Johnie who is telling one of his "Queerest stories", the Miller, with the landlady looking on at the back beside the fireplace. The group are described as sitting "fast by an ingle bleezing finely".

These friezes depict the four key scenes in Tam o’ Shanter: the first shows an Ayr alehouse, ‘Boozing at the Nappy’; ‘Tam must ride’ comes next; ‘Witches and warlocks in a dance’ follows; and finally ‘Maggie’s mettle’.
