Description

Engraving depicting Burns Cottage in Alloway, around 1801. Inscribed 'Drawn on the spot by W. Score' and 'Published by R. Chapman, Printer, Glasgow'. In a wooden frame.

The scene depicts the Cottage where the future Poet was to spend only the first seven years of his life. As a young child Burns with his brothers and sisters would be expected to work on the land to assist their parents.

Several engravings of the Cottage were produced over the years particularly around the time of the centenary of his death in 1896. This is one drawn on the spot by William Score, acquatinted by Robert Scott.

The earliest illustration of Burns Cottage, published November 1801
