Description
Black and white engraving of Mrs Jean Burns wearing an empire line black mourning dress with white widow's bonnet and fichu. Engraving is on a gold, oval shaped background mounted on cream paper. In a wood and giltwood frame.
The original portrait by Gilfillan was painted from life in 1821, and was presented by the Artist to Dumfries Burns Club. The engraving by G. Cook depicts Jean as a widow in 1826. This was taken from an original portrait from life by Gilfillan. Jean survived her husband by almost 40 years, which were spent in Dumfries.
