Description

Oil on canvas painting of the Auld Brig of Ayr. Ornate giltwood composite frame. Label on reverse of frame for 'John Mathieson & Co., Fine Art Dealers, Edinburgh'.

This oil painting is of the Auld Brig of Ayr by an unknown artist. The Brig was made famous by Burns in his poem "the Brigs o' Ayr". Burns in the poem prophesied that the new brig being built in 1786 would collapse before the old brig (dating from the 13th century).

The new brig collapsed in a flood in 1877 which left the old brig intact. The poem comprises a dialogue between the old and new brigs which contains the line "I'll be a brig when ye're a shapeless cairn" spoken by the auld brig.
