Description

Engraving of Mrs. Dunlop of Dunlop. Gilt mount. In ebonised wooden frame.

Mrs. Frances Dunlop (1730-1815) was a widow with 11 children when she met Burns. They corresponded regularly over many years and the poet visited her house on at least 5 occasions, staying overnight on 3 visits.

Burns wrote more letters to her than any other correspondent. Burns valued her intelligent and kindly interest in him, but he discreetly chose to overlook her well meant but frequently unsound literary advice. The picture depicted was engraved by H. Robinson in 1840.
