Letter from Robert Burns to James Johnson, 1791
I received your letter with the proofs of two
songs, but M.r Clarke has mistaken one of them, the song, Craigie
burnwood, sadly, having put the Chorus to the wrong part of
the tune. - so I have given it him to correct. - I send
you thirteen songs, with two Numbers of a Publication called, the
Bee, in which are two Scots songs with the music which
are well worthy your insertion. - Please take care of the
two numbers, as the loss of them would break my Set. -
On second thoughts, I send you also two other songs with directions
where to find the tunes. - I have besides many other songs on
the stocks, so you need not fear a want of materials. I was
so lucky lately as to pick an entire copy of Oswald's Scots [page torn]
& I think I shall make glorious work out of it. - I want mi [page torn]
Anderson's Collection of Strathspeys &c. then I think I will [page torn]
all the Music of [page torn] - Send me your proofs as
soon as ready. -
Send two cop- [page torn] Capt.n Riddel's strathspeys by the
Dumfries car-[page torn] eted to Capt.n Craik of Arbigland, care
of Capt.n Hamilton, Dumfries; & your price shall be sent
you by any channel you appoint.
yours -
R. Burns
