London 5th May 1811
My Dear Mother
I arrived here safe yesterday
morning rather fatigued but not so much as I expected
for. I slept a great part of the way.
Immediately upon my arrival I went to Robert’s
lodgings as I did not know where my uncle’s were.
After breakfast I waited upon Sir James Shaw
who to add to his other favours invited me to stop
at his house while in town. Sir James has begged
Mr Douglas to superintend my outfit which will
be done by a person whom he knows at a more moderate
than any other in London.

Sir James’s nephew, Mr John Shaw took me to the Lyceum
Theatre where I was much gratified, I used to think
the players at Dumfries were excellent but after
seeing these I can’t say I admire them so much.
There is a Miss Poole and Mrs Bland who sing
most delightfully. I saw your brother Robert and
he is very well; he has no lodgings now but sleeps
every night in the Warehouse as guard I believe.
Remember me to all my friends and I hope
they are all well. I have not yet seen Mr. McIntosh
but will see him soon. Give my best respects to
Mr and Mrs Perechon. No more at present from
your affectionate. Son.
