Description
Letter from Gavin Gemmel to the Rev. Peter Hately Waddell concerning the provenance of the Stair Manuscripts, dated 31st January 1868.
Reads:
"The ten leaves of Manuscripts which Burns sent to Mrs Stewart of Stair were purchased (about 1850) by the late Mr Dick and myself, and three others, from her grandson, Mr Allason Cuninghame of Logan. I doubt you will think we did a foolish thing when, instead of keeping them intact, we resolved to have two leaves each. Our enthusiasm must be our excuse."
