Description

Lithograph depicting a portrait of the poet Robert Burns from a painting by Sir Daniel Macnee, FRSA. Burns portrait in an oval surrounded by scenes illustrative of his life and writings by A. Maclure.

Inscribed 'Centenary of the birth of Robert Burns, 25 January 1859. Dedicated by especial permission to Her Majesty the Queen by her Humble and faithful servants Maclure & Macdonald'. Published by Maclure and MacDonald of Glasgow, this centenary lithograph was produced as a folio sheet dedicated to "Her Most Gracious Majesty The Queen".

Macnee's painting of Burns for the centenary was based on the Skirving original and Maclure's charming vignettes include scenes based on Scots Wha Hey, the Twa Dogs, Tam o' Shanter, with Burns Cottage, Burns Monument, and Kirk Alloway featuring in the scenes.
