Description

White marble statuette of Robert Burns and Highland Mary holding hands, carved by Hamilton P. McCarthy around 1870.

This marble statuette carved by Hamilton P. McCarthy around the 1870's shows the poet Robert Burns standing barefoot together with Mary Campbell (Highland Mary) in embrace during their courtship.

It is likely that the sculptor saw this group as representing the parting of Burns and Highland Mary which was reputed to have taken place in 1786 on the banks of the Fail burn close to its confluence with the river Ayr.
