Description

Toddy ladle made of horn, with round bowl and long handle. It is said to have been used by Robert Burns.

The horn toddy ladle was said to have been used by Burns when dining in Nanse Tinnock's Inn, Mauchline. It was built in 1712 is still extant, but not as an inn. Nance Tinnock told Robert Chambers 'that Robert Burns.. had never taken three half mutchkins in her house in all her life.'

Robert is believed to have used this punch bowl and ladle in his local pub, Nanse Tinnock’s Inn in Mauchline. The popular myth that Robert was a heavy drinker has made objects like these very collectable in the 19th century.
