Description

Oil on canvas depicting Burns monument to centre, both Brigs o'Doon to left and right respectively, large procession over the new Brig o'Doon and numerous crowds of people around or beside the monument. In ornate giltwood frame with carved floral and foliage design.

This painting by an unknown artist depicts the 1844 Burns Festival procession, which started in Ayr, as it passes over the new and old brigs o' Doon and enters the festival site at Burns Monument, where Burns's three surviving sons were guests of honour.

The Burns Festival on 6 August 1844 attracted over 100,000 participants to Alloway. A banqueting marquee (on the right in the painting) was specially constructed for 1,400 invited guests and a platform was built in front of Burns Monument to seat the guests of honour, including the poet’s three surviving sons.
