Description

Wooden fragment from the coffin of Robert Burns, 1796.

In a small card box, inscribed 'Finest ivory visiting cards. From W.M. Lyon, Society Stationer, 389 Sauchiehall St, Glagow'. With a hand-written note on an old calling card which states that this piece was presented by Andrew Rutherglen.

This relic-like object was removed when Burns’s grave was opened to receive his wife, Jean Amour's body, in 1834. Less than 40 years after his death he had achieved an almost saint-like status, leading to the collection of items of reliquary such as this.
