Description
Engraving of Captain Francis Grose wearing a frock coat, breeches, coat, tricorn hat and a sword. On a giltpaper background. In a wood and giltwood frame.
Francis Grose (1731–91) was a retired army captain who became friends with Robert during his tour of Galloway. Grose agreed to include Alloway in his next book of antiquities, on the condition that Robert wrote a poem about its ruined kirk. Tam o’ Shanter was the result.
