Description

Plaster model of the bust of Robert Burns on oak rectangular plinth. The plinth is inscribed on the front 'Presented to Burns Cottage by John Keppie A.R.S.A / Bust by Sir John Steell' . The bust is signed on the back and dated 1883.

Original was executed by Sir John Steell for the Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, London. This plaster bust is based on his bronze statue and is one of several which he carved in marble, One one of which rests in the Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, London. This example was presented to the Burns Cottage Museum by John Keppie ARSA.

Sir John Steell RSA was the son of an Aberdeen wood carver who became a most distinguished sculptor and introduced the technique of bronze casting to Scotland. His full size bronze sculpture of Burns are to be seen in New York, Dundee, Dunedin and London.
