Description

Engraving depicting the 'Twa Brigs o' Ayr'. Proof on india paper, captioned: 'I'll be a brig when ye're a shapeless cairn'. In a mahogany and giltwood frame and cream mount.

The scene sketched about 1885 shows the new downstream bridge in a pile of rubble after a flood in 1877 swept the bridge away. It is captioned "I'll be a brig, when ye're a shapeless cairn !" This was the prophecy by the old bridge suggesting that it would not remain standing for long- which proved correct.

The engraving illustrated was sketched by W. Forrest after W.E. Lockhart In the background of the sketch is the steeple of the newly completed Ayr Town Buildings.
