Description

Pewter, 'Half Mutchkin', measure. Bulbous body on circular foot with curved handle and thumbplate on circular lid.

From the Globe Tavern, Dumfries. Scots, Circa 1750. Autographed by Robert Burns on the base.

Bears a stamp Y/122 which is a stamp for standardisation and checked later in Victoria's reign as equivalent to 1/2 Pint.

The half mutchin pewter measure is a small tankard with lid (circa 1750) is said to have been used by the Poet in the Globe Tavern, Dumfries. Made by Deacon of Edinburgh. One mutchkin was equal to 4 gills.
