This cosy cottage sits at the foot of Torridon and is surrounded by some of Scotland’s most rugged and romantic landscapes, making it an unmissable getaway for keen ramblers, munro-baggers, or anyone looking to escape to the peace and quiet of the great outdoors.

Spend your day enjoying incredible walks among the rocky hills, where you might spot red deer, otters playing by the loch or golden eagles soaring through the sky. Then retire to the cosy sitting room for a stiff drink by the roaring fire and the chance to cuddle up on the sofa and enjoy a quiet evening.

Lydia Cottage, Cromarty

This quaint detached cottage in the lovely town of Cromarty is a wonderful place to unwind, but also has plenty to do on your doorstep. Once you’re through the gate and inside, you’ll find a cosy sitting room and kitchen downstairs with slate floors and an open fire, and upstairs you can enjoy a great night’s sleep in a comfortable twin room.

The town of Cromarty is a secret jewel of the Highlands – beautifully preserved and rich in history and folklore. After a tranquil breakfast in your private garden, you can explore everything that the town has to offer, from cafés, shops and museums to the beautiful beaches and countryside nearby. Don’t forget to visit Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum, which is on your doorstep and tells the fascinating story of one of the great Scots of the 19th century.

North Segganwell, Culzean Castle & Country Park

Another of our wonderful holiday properties on the Culzean estate is this single-storey cottage once belonging to shepherd William Kirkland and his family. With a prime location on the coastline, it combines two romantic breaks into one – the perfect remote seaside escape, with a cultural adventure on your doorstep too.

Spend your days exploring the opulent castle, with its famous oval staircase (designed by the legendary architect Robert Adam) and grand collection of antique weaponry, then take the scenic route home through the spectacular country park, admiring the views over the Firth of Clyde on your way back to a roaring fire and luxurious bed.

And nestled in the wooded grounds is Beechgrove Cottage, a charming single-storey cottage with everything you need for a weekend of romance and relaxation.

Wake up to the sound of birds in the garden outside, and enjoy your morning cuppa in the peaceful private garden. Make a plan for the day while you enjoy a view of the surrounding forest, then set off to explore Pitmedden’s spectacular Great Garden (dating back to 1675), sculptures, parterres and thousands of plants. From your base at this wonderful property, you can easily enjoy a day trip to Pitmedden Village or bustling Aberdeen City.

Courtyard Cottage, Drum Castle, Garden & Estate

With a woodburning stove, spacious rooms and decoration befitting its castle setting, this wonderful first floor apartment is hidden behind an unassuming door in a secluded courtyard, and it feels like a hidden gem!

On your doorstep is Drum Castle, which has played a major part in Scottish history, and has connections to the Jacobites and Robert the Bruce. Exploring the exquisite 16th-century chapel, wandering the ancient Old Wood of Drum and the Garden of Historic Roses, and climbing the steps to enjoy the view from the battlements will add an air of romance to any stay, no matter how brief – and since it’s been standing for 700 years, you can count on it being here when you come back for more.

Unassuming from the outside, you’ll soon be rushing back from your day trips to put your feet up in this brilliantly boutique cottage, which sits at the entrance to the House of the Binns estate.

There’s a beautiful enclosed garden where you can catch the sunset or enjoy your breakfast brew, and the property is surrounded by acres of sprawling parkland. Roam the estate in search of interesting plants and wildlife, or take a tour of the house to see magnificent plaster ceilings and a grand collection of art and furniture. You’re also not far from other historic Trust places like Bannockburn and Culross, as well as majestic Edinburgh City.

Middle Cottage, Hill of Tarvit Mansion & Garden

One of our most tranquil and picturesque holiday properties, this Georgian cottage is lovely inside and out, with an open fire, country-style interiors and sun streaming through the windows into the cosy sitting room (perfect for lazy mornings with breakfast and tea). But our favourite thing about Middle Cottage is the idyllic garden, which is at its best in full spring bloom.

Nestled in the grounds of Hill of Tarvit, fans of Downton Abbey are in for treat with a tour of this Edwardian mansion. Specially designed for a wealthy industrialist by Scottish architect Robert Lorimer, you’ll notice various interior styles and collections.

Elsewhere in Fife there are plenty of historic properties to visit, and some spectacular beaches for barefoot sunset strolling.
