New for 2024: Ivory exhibition

Over several generations, the Brodie family had associations with British India, the British East India Company and the Far East. A new exhibition – Money Can’t Own Ivory, Only Elephants Can – traces the family’s time in India and focuses on its collection of ivory objects.

The exhibition also touches on wider issues around the ivory trade and the conservation of elephants. It has been developed with the support of Conservation Scientist Molly Brown, a PhD researcher at the University of York, Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity.

You can visit the exhibition on a special tour on selected dates. Tours are led by one of our trained guides, taking in the main rooms of Brodie Castle and covering the history of the Brodie family. The tour lasts for around 55 minutes.

Highchair

Cormack’s Lodge (sleeps 2/3). This romantic rural cottage is tucked away down a narrow road, a short walk from the castle. During the day, wander round the castle grounds then while away evenings in front of the wood-burning stove. The dining room has views of the estate and the cottage has its own private garden, perfect for alfresco breakfasts and impromptu picnics.

South Lodge (sleeps 4). South Lodge lies close to the castle and is secluded and perfect for families with children. A large garden for impromptu picnics and a warm wood-burning stove in the sitting room make this a great retreat at any time of year.

Garden House (sleeps 6). This magnificent detached cottage is set over two storeys and makes an idyllic, pet-friendly setting for a family getaway. Set on an estate with a rich history, you’ll enjoy easy access to the 16th-century Brodie Castle as well as the beaches of Findhorn and Nairn. Prepare for the day and head out to the Playful Garden through your garden gate, where you’ll find Scotland’s biggest bunny sculpture and the National Daffodil Collection, the perfect way to immerse yourself in nature right on your doorstep.

Laird’s Wing (sleeps 14). Fine art, antique furniture and centuries of history make this huge apartment a splendid place to celebrate family occasions or spoil your visiting guests. The late Ninian Brodie lived here until 2003, and it has all the comforts of a luxury modern home, while being spread across three floors of the magnificent turreted castle. When not enjoying the grand dining room or games room, guests can play croquet in the castle grounds or wander through acres of nature trails, spotting swans, ducks and red squirrels. There’s no better place to experience the life of a contemporary laird.

Booking a holiday with the National Trust for Scotland helps us to protect these places, now and for the future.
