Transport – by air and sea

By air

Fair Isle Airfield is operated as a licensed airfield regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority.

The National Trust for Scotland employs the Fire & Rescue team to support the airfield operation.

The National Trust for Scotland aims to achieve its objective to maintain the current communication and transportation links to the island for the community and underpin its sustainability as the most remote community in the British Isles.

By sea

The mail boat Good Shepherd IV operates regularly during summer between North Haven on Fair Isle to Grutness Pier near Sumburgh in Shetland (with a few sailings to Lerwick). The boat carries 12 passengers and takes about 2½ hours to Fair Isle. For bookings, phone 01595 760363.
