Constructed sometime in the late 17th or early 18th Century by John Feddes, a pirate and the great-grandfather of Hugh Miller, the birthplace cottage was paid for using Spanish gold! It is one of the few remaining thatched homes in the region. Meticulously maintained, it transports visitors back to the 1800s when Hugh Miller resided there with his family.

Originally, the structure was covered with a blend of clay and straw, but it was later thatched using local reeds. A new ridgeline was recently installed to help preserve the traditional thatched roof.

Inside the cottage, visitors can learn more about the space where Hugh Miller grew up, including the room where he penned his first stories inspired by the local folklore and legends of the Black Isle, as well as quirkier objects such as the witch‘s ball, which was intended to safeguard those within the cottage from spirits
