Thomas Carlyle’s Birthplace has been open to the public since a month after Carlyle died in 1881, meaning the property has remained largely untouched by time. The original fireplace, dating back to 1790, remains in the kitchen. It is the focal point for visitors when they enter the property and is much admired by visitors, staff and volunteers alike.
