Lighting up our summits

A line of walkers head towards the summit of Ben Lomond, walking along a narrow stone path. The man in front wears a wide-brimmed hat and a heavily laden backpack. Loch Lomond can be seen shimmering in the distance below.
We’re running a series of twilight walks in 2019 to help raise funds for, and awareness of, our work to care for Scotland’s mountains.

On Saturday 27 April 2019, the Torchlight Challenge invited those with a passion for Scotland’s mountains to climb one of our iconic peaks at dusk – Ben Lomond, Goatfell or Ben Lawers – all to raise essential funds for the Trust and local mountain rescue teams.

The only event of its kind, the Torchlight Challenge saw walkers at each location reach the summit and illuminate their torches and beacons, to be seen by the walkers on the other summits as well as by people enjoying the majesty of our landscapes from below.

“From the summit of each mountain you’ll be able to spot the lights shining from the other hills, creating a truly magical experience.”
Alasdair Eckersall, Senior Ranger at Ben Lomond

Alasdair said: ‘I would encourage anyone after a unique and magical experience to get involved in this event. Whether you’re a serious hiker or just enjoy being out in the Scottish countryside, it will be unforgettable. Our love for Scotland is at the centre of everything we do, and this will help us quite literally shine a light on some of our amazing landscapes.’

Running since 2014, the National Trust for Scotland’s Torchlight Challenge has sold out every year. With an additional 40 spaces available, the 2019 challenge was set to be the biggest and most memorable yet.

Registration cost £15 and included a bespoke Torchlight Challenge t-shirt, refreshments and a guide on the night. We ask for a minimum sponsorship of £50 to be raised by every participant to help the National Trust for Scotland care for Scotland’s heritage and support local mountain rescue teams.

The Trust cares for some of Scotland’s most important mountain habitats, ensuring that they are protected and that people can experience and enjoy them.

To carry out our important conservation work, for the love of Scotland, we rely on the support of our members, funders and donors – the Torchlight Challenge is just one way in which our generous supporters contribute to our charity.
