The learning programme at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
At Robert Burns Birthplace Museum we offer a comprehensive learning programme, including Sandford Award-winning school workshops, adult education classes, informal family activities and community engagement projects – all supported by our expert Learning Team.
Our school workshops cater for Early Years up to Advanced Highers and can be adapted to suit bespoke learning requirements and additional support needs. They cover a broad range of Curriculum for Excellence topics including Scots language, literacy, expressive arts, social studies and health and wellbeing –all allowing pupils to creatively engage with the life and themes of Scotland’s National Bard in the village in which he was born.

Our workshops can be delivered at Burns Cottage itself or at the modern museum along the road, and are designed to be both fun and educational – the perfect mix for a school trip! We also offer lunch facilities and guided site walks, and have a range of online learning resources available to support your visit. We are fortunate enough to be able to offer a subsidy of up to 75% of your travel expenses on the day of your school visit. Please contact us on 01292 443700 for more information about our schools programme and to book a session.
RBBM is a Scots language centre and we strive to make sure that the language Burns wrote in continues to be spoken and used today. Please contact Chris Waddell on cwaddell@nts.org.uk for more information on our Scots language strategy.
At RBBM we believe that informal and lifelong learning is very important. Throughout the year, we deliver a range of activities for all the family to enjoy: crafts, tours, trails, self-led explorer backpacks, and special events including Burns Night, Easter and Halloween. We also cater for adult audiences, with a varied programme of Sunday talks throughout the year as well as specialist classes in Scots language and creative skills. We aim to engage with as many different community groups as possible – in the past we have worked with care home residents, intergenerational groups, adults with additional support needs and people living with dementia. Our Learning Team works to ensure that our programmes and the collection in general are as accessible to as many audiences as possible. Please see our Accessibility Guide for more details.
For more information on any of these activities, please contact the Learning team at burns@nts.org.uk or telephone 01292 443700.
