Visitor statistics for the Hill House

The Hill House visitor survey!
The Hill House offers guides in six languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese and Lithuanian. However, are these languages representative of where our visitors come from?

The Hill House Visitor Services team were curious to learn whether the language guides currently on offer at the site were in alignment with the languages spoken by our visitors. Over the course of a 19-week project during our most popular season, from late June to early November, we set up a survey to find out where our international visitors were visiting from, and what languages they were speaking.

Some of us thought there would be a fair number of German-speaking visitors, as we are frequently asked for those language guides. We also expected a significant number of French- and Italian-speaking visitors. But who else was visiting the Hill House?

The results of our survey told us that we received over 2,000 international visitors who didn’t speak English as their primary language. We welcomed visitors from 53 countries, speaking at least 34 different languages. The 5 countries we received the most visitors from were: Germany, the US, Italy, France and Australia. Of the top 15 countries we received visitors from, only 1/3 of these countries use English as a primary language.

Quote
“The top ten languages (other than English) spoken by visitors were: German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin, Danish, Flemish, Japanese and Hungarian (in order).”

These are broadly in alignment with countries we commonly welcome people from – for example, large numbers of visitors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have led to a significant number of German-speaking visitors. Yet, other languages came as a pleasant surprise to the Hill House team – for example, several VSAs remarked that they hadn’t realised how many Hungarian visitors we have had!

So, it is now the end of the year, and we are able to say that people from all six inhabitable continents visit the Hill House, from Azerbaijan to South Africa to Uruguay! Some people visit for Mackintosh; some people for the Box; others merely to soak up some Scottish art and culture. We look forward to another year of multicultural exploration of what the Hill House has to offer our visitors, as our team continues to get a better sense of who comes to our site, why, and how we can offer them the best visitor experience.
